Visitors to the Pinakothek
der Moderne can explore art, graphic works, architecture and design in an
exhibition space of around 130,000 square feet in total, of a quality and
concentration that is unique in Germany
and indeed in Europe. As one of the world’s
largest museums for 20th and 21st-century art, the open
and spacious building, designed by Stephan Braunfels and opened in 2002, is an
invitation to discover links between the diffierent genre and gain surprising
new insights.
The Sammlung Moderne Kunst,
as part of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, boasts important works by
international artists in the fields of painting, sculpture, photography and
media art, from Expressionism, New Objectivity and Surrealism to the most
important movements in post-war European art and American art from the 1960s
onwards. Relevant and exceptional works of contemporary art supplement the
range covered by the collection.
The Staatliche Graphische
Sammlung (Prints Collection), the Architecture
Museum of the Technische
Universität München and Die Neue Sammlung – The International Design Museum
Munich also stage temporary exhibitions that are complemented by a varied
programme of events.
