The Hamburger Kunsthalle is
one of the few pubic art museums in Germany that can offer a general
overview of art from the Middle Ages to the present day. Specialist areas
include North German medieval painting with altarpieces by Master Bertram and
Master Francke, 17th-century Netherlandish painting, 19th-century
German painting with works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge,
Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann and classical Modernist works by Max Beckmann,
Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Edvard Munch and Paul Klee. In the
contemporary art gallery works by artists such as Bruce Nauman, Gerhard
Richter, Rosemarie Trockel and Sigmar Polke are presented alternately. The
prints collection with more than 100,000 drawings and graphic works is one of
the most important in Germany.
The Hamburger Kunsthalle is often the focus of international attention thanks
to its temporary exhibitions.
