The Kunsthalle Bremen is
still privately operated by the Bremen Art Society that was founded in 1823 as
one of the first in Germany.
The collection ranges from the 14th century to the present day, beginning with
an early European panel painting, the Masolino Altar, dating from 1423 and extensive
holdings of 17th-century Dutch paintings. The museums includes European
painting from the Middle Ages to the present day, sculpture from the 16th to
the 21st centuries and media art. One focal point is French and German 19th and
20th-century art, including works by Monet and van Gogh as well as Liebermann
and Corinth.
The Prints Collection, forming the very core of the collection, comprises more
than 200,000 original drawings and graphic works and is, as such, one of the
most important of its kind. The Art Society actively supports current art
movements by, among other things, awarding the ‘Kunstpreis der Böttcherstraße
in Bremen’.
