Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte Münster
The LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur in Münster was founded more than 100 years ago thanks to the commitment of local residents. The original building in the centre of the Old Town was opened in 1908. By autumn 2014, a new museum building will be completed that will increase the exhibition space to more than 80,000 square feet and, for the first time, enable a tour through the old and new buildings to be made without going outside that is also suitable for wheelchair users.
With its multifaceted collections, the leading museum for art and cultural history within the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) offers an insight into 1,000 years of western culture. The holdings comprise more than 100,000 objects ranging from medieval ecclesiastical art in Westphalia to works from the Renaissance, the Baroque and the 19th century right through to classical Modernist works and contemporary art. The museum displays its international side through its temporary exhibitions, in particular, and the sculpture projects that have been held since 1977. The policy behind the exhibitions and the collection is to present Westphalian art and cultural history in a European and international context.
