The Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe sees itself as a mediator between the past, present and future. Safeguarding the legacy of several centuries is one of the museum’s priorities as is establishing a contemporary dialogue between the historical collection and its quality extension. Opened in 1846, the Kunsthalle is one of the few, older German art museums to have retained its original substance to a large degree. It occupies three historical buildings on the edge of the Botanical Gardens. The main building and the Orangerie house the permanent display of some 800 works from the Middle Ages up to the present day. The ‘Junge Kunsthalle’ is used for temporary exhibitions specially conceived for children and youths.
